Building Out a Big Family for Lil’ Apples

Developing Retail Packaging and Branding for Family Farm Hudson River Fruit Distributors

Who doesn’t love things in miniature versions? Family Farm Hudson River Fruit Distributors developed mini versions of familiar apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, Pink Lady, Empire, Red Delicious, Fuji, and McIntosh. 29 Design Studio developed logos, retail packaging, and brand guidelines to market the new product line.

We started with a hand-drawn logo for the mini Honeycrisp apple, Lil’ Honeys. Once that brand was successful, we applied the look, tone and feel for the entire brand suite of the Lil’ product line. 

How to roll out in retail? The consumer wants a quick way to pick up apples and put them in their shopping cart and store them at home. These durable branded bags help customer convenience and help the brand stand out on displays. 

With space on the bag, we could help tell the story of the apple grower, Hudson River Fruit Distributors. We added a timeline of the farm’s history and a beautiful aerial photo of the farm. Together, brand and packaging told a fantastic story of a growing family farm.
